WBS Penguins Re-sign Joey Mormina

Tuesday, July 12, 2011
The Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins announced today the re-signing of defenseman Joey Mormina to a one-year AHL deal.

Mormina, like recently signed Boris Valabik, adds size and some more experience to the AHL blue line. Mormina has always been a full-time AHL defensman, compiling nearly 400 games in his AHL career that spans over six years.

Here's a look at the defensive core that could be wearing WBS jersey's in the fall:
Alexandre Picard, Robert Bortuzzo, Brian Strait, Simon Despres, Carl Sneep, Boris Valabik, Joey Mormina, Alex Grant and Philip Samuelsson.
Picard could stick in the NHL, but with seven defenseman on one way contracts in Pittsburgh someone would have to be moved to make room for him. Grant and Samuelsson are certainly at the bottom of the depth chart and could be better off starting the year in the ECHL with the Wheeling Nailers, but it depends on where Picard fits in the organization.

One thing is certain, and that is that the Penguins are deep at the defense position heading into 2011-12.

The Penguins annual development camp begins in the morning. Check out the preview of that here.

This signing actually surprised me a bit. I didn't think he would be signed. It'll be interesting to see the competition for spots on D
