Lerg/Street Lead Shorthanded Pens to Win

Saturday, January 14, 2012

It was a shooting gallery in the third period, but the Penguins came out on top thanks to three shorthanded goals tonight. Penguins win 6-4, and have won six straight road games. The Penguins road record so far this season is quite impressive: 15-3-0-2.

Ben Street scored a penalty shot goal shorthanded in the second period and added an assist, while  Bryan Lerg scored two goals and an assist.

It was Brad Thiessen vs. David Aebischer in net tonight. Colin McDonald returned from Pittsburgh and Joey Mormina returned from an injury. Ryan Schnell and Peter Merth were the healthy scratches. Nick Petersen is out of the lineup and is day-to-day.

Tonight was the first trip to St. John's since January 2003, and the first ever meeting between the Penguins and Icecaps.

Recap after the jump.

Kendal McArdle gave the Icecaps an early 1-0 lead at the 13:12 mark of the first period, but the Penguins would tie it at one with a power play goal from Bryan Lerg just 1:43 later. Paul Thompson and Colin McDonald got the assists. Thompson continues to play well, scoring two goals in his last game and adding an assist tonight.

The teams also traded goals in a span of 1:44 in the second period. The Penguins took a brief lead after Ryan Craig put one past Aebischer. Zach Sill got the lone assist. Brett Festerling tied the game at two at the 9:39 mark.

The turning point of tonight's contest came with the Penguins shorthanded while Matt Rust was in the penalty box serving a hooking call. Ben Street sprung himself to a breakaway and was hooked on his shot attempt, being awarded a penalty shot. He beat Aebischer with a backhand to forehand move and gave the Penguins the important one goal lead heading into the third period.

A wild third period tonight.  Ben Maxwell tied the game at three at the 8:33 mark of the final frame, just ten seconds after Thiessen stopped a penalty shot.

But then the Penguins erupted for two quick shorthanded goals in 21 seconds to make it 5-3 with 8:41 to play.  The first was a great give and go feed from Ben Street to Bryan Lerg for an easy finish. The second one was a Lerg drop back pass to Joey Mormina, who scored a goal in his first game back in the WBS lineup.

The Icecaps made a game of it with a loose puck rebound goal with 5:26 to play, but Ryan Craig added an empty netter in the final minute to seal the deal.
