Paul Thompson scored off his own rebound on the power play to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead in the first period. With Bennett and Tangradi in Pittsburgh, it was good to see Thompson score in back-to-back games, bringing his season total to a team leading 11 goals.
Brian Gibbons flew down the wing on an odd man rush in the 2nd period and found a streaking Brian Dumoulin in between the face-off circles and fed Dumoulin a perfect pass. The only thing better was Dumoulin's shot, which picked the top right corner and gave the Pens a 2-1 lead.
Brad Thiessen got the start in net for the second straight night. Thiessen was sharp, allowing just one goal on shots. With two wins this weekend and wins in three of his last four starts, Thiessen is making his case to be the Penguins starting goaltender.
Robert Bortuzzo and Brian Strait were out of the lineup tonight as they head to Pittsburgh to join fellow WBS players Eric Tangradi, Beau Bennett, Simon Despres and Jayson Megna for NHL Penguins training camp.
To replace guys headed to Pittsburgh, the Penguins added forwards Chris Barton and Paul Crowder from Wheeling. Barton had a few chances tonight. Didn't see much from Crowder, and he didn't play much if at all in the third period.
Joe Morrow was on the ice for the Phantoms lone goal of the game and sat on the bench the entire third period. It's safe to say the coaching staff is unhappy with his play as of late. And with the Pens down to just 6 defensemen, I'd expect Carl Sneep to make his return to Wilkes-Barre before the Penguins head to Norfolk for a Tuesday night game.
