Pens Blank Sharks 3-0, End Slide

Saturday, January 5, 2013

Benn Ferriero opened up the scoring just 40 seconds into the game against his former team, finishing off a Beau Bennett wrap around. Riley Holzapfel added to the lead in the 2nd period with an absolute beauty of a shot.

Warren Peters tapped in a rebound goal off an Eric Tangradi shot and the Penguins took a 3-0 lead into the second intermission. Familiar territory for the Penguins, who twice in their last 12 games had seen 3-0 leads evaporate into disappointing losses.

Mike O'Brien asked Warren Peters during the second intermission interview what the keys to the third period would be and Peters' response, "We just got to keep our nose to the grindstone."

The Penguins did just that tonight, ending their slide and getting back in the win column with a 3-0 victory over the Worcester Sharks.

Brad Thiessen got the start in net tonight and was very impressive, stopping all 30 shots he faced for his first regulation win of the season. And a shut out to boot!

An all around good night for the Penguins organization as the Wheeling Nailers won their game 5-0 tonight as well.

The only sour news is that Benn Ferriero did not return during the third period and did not come out to the ice after being named the game's 2nd star either. Not sure on his status for tomorrow.

The only change to the lineup from last night was Steve MacIntyre in for Alex Grant on the 4th line. Simon Despres and Phil Dupuis were healthy scratches for the second straight night.

The Penguins conclude their three game weekend with a 3 pm matinee in Hartford tomorrow afternoon against the Connecticut Whale.
