Bear Hugged - Slow Start Haunts Pens

Friday, March 1, 2013
Besides the first 9:30 of the game, the Penguins were clearly the better team. They out shot the Bears 32-7 after allowing the games first three goals. Unfortunately, the Bears tallied three goals on their first seven shots and the Penguins managed just two through the final 50:30.

After the three goal first 9:30, Jeff Zatkoff replaced Brad Thiessen in net. Sure Thiessen wasn't at his best, but I'm not sure it would have mattered who was in net with how flat the Penguins came out of the starting gate tonight.

The lone bright spot of the evening came with 4:45 left in the opening period. Tom Kostopolous scored a TK-type goal, stuffing home a rebound past a sprawling Dany Sabourin. It was his third consecutive game with a goal, and tonight's goal was his 100th career goal with the AHL Penguins.

Joey Mormina banked one off the post and in during the 2nd period to cut the deficit to one, but that's as close as the Penguins would get. Warren Peters and Adam Payerl assisted on Captain Mormina's second goal of the season.

The story of the Penguins season has been outwork and outplay the opposition most of the time, but it's the small percentage of time when they're off their game that decides the outcome of these games. Tonight the mistakes ended up in the back of the net.  Simple as that.

Penguins get right back at it tomorrow night when they welcome the Albany Devils to Mohegan Sun Arena.

ROSTER NOTES

Brad Thiessen started the game but was pulled after allowing three goals on seven shots. Jeff Zatkoff replaced Thiessen and stopped all eight shots he faced.

Chris Collins returned to the WBS lineup. Christian Minella was scratched to make room for Collins. Alex Grant did not take the warmup skate and was not in the lineup tonight.
