Penguins Sign D Brendan Mikkelson

It seems the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins added a more veteran presence on the blue line this afternoon, signing defensemen Brendan Mikkelson to a one-year, two-way contract.

WBS Penguins fans might remember Mikkelson from the conference finals against Syracuse. Mikkelson finished the season with the Crunch, adding two assists in 13 regular season games and two goals in 13 playoff contests.

All in all, Mikkelson is a big veteran defensive defenseman with 131 games of NHL experience that the AHL Penguins were looking for to add to their young collection of blue line prospects.

With eight defenseman at the NHL level already, Mikkelson will likely join the WBS blue line in the fall that already features the likes of Philip Samuelsson, Brian Dumoulin and Scott Harrington. Here's a preliminary AHL depth chart with the addition of Mikkelson:

Dumoulin - Samuelsson
Mikkelson - Harrington
McNeill - D'Agostino

I wouldn't mind seeing a shutdown pair of Samuelsson-Harrington, which would then bump the new vet up to a Dumoulin-Mikkelson combo, combining two more offensively skilled D the way they had last year with Reese.
