WBS Penguins Send Three to Wheeling

Wednesday, January 8, 2014

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have re-assigned defensemen Peter Merth and Nick D'Agostino along with forward Cody Sylvester to the Wheeling Nailers (ECHL).

For Peter Merth, the re-assignment comes with a chance to get in some game action, as he has been recovering from an injury that has only allowed him to play in two games with the Pens this season. Merth had been practicing with the team, though he hasn't played in a game since December 6th.

The demotion of Nick D'Agostino comes as a bit of a surprise, but the rookie defenseman will go from a third pairing with limited ice time at the AHL level to probably a top pairing with more minutes and more power play time at the ECHL level, which will be good for his development in the long run. In 25 games with the Pens this season, D'Agostino tallied seven points (1G-6A), 11 PIM and a minus one rating.

Cody Sylvester came to the Pens in the midst of all the injuries and call ups and made quite the impression in his first game up in Rochester, scoring his first AHL goal in the Pens' 3-1 win over the Americans back on November 20th. In all, Sylvester registered two points (2G-0A) in 17 games with the Pens.

These roster moves leave the Pens with 13 healthy forwards, including Bobby Farnham who was reported to have practiced with the team yesterday for the first time in 2014, and seven healthy defensemen.

The Penguins host the Syracuse Crunch tonight at 7:05 p.m. EST.
