The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins let an early 3-2 lead in the third period slip and end up falling 4-3 in a shootout to the Providence Bruins tonight. The Pens pick up a point in the standings and move up to 8th in the Eastern Conference, but are now winless in their last six games (0-3-2-1).

Spencer Machacek has sparked the WBS offense upon his arrival. Machacek scored two goals tonight, including the go-ahead goal 0:33 into the third period, before Providence's Justin Florek tied the game at 3-3 to get it to overtime. Machacek has five points (4G-1A) in six games with the Penguins since coming over in the trade that sent Paul Thompson to the Springfield Falcons.

The Penguins shootout loss, paired with a Norfolk regulation loss to Albany, moves the Penguins into third place in the East Division. The Pens are back in the playoffs at 8th in the conference, but with several games coming up against those in the standings with them, they'll be looking for two points and wins in regulation. Next up for the Penguins is an East Division match up with the Hershey Bears on Tuesday night.

Quick recap of events after the jump.

Jayson Megna scored his 9th of the season to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead late in the first period. It was Megna's first goal with WBS since being re-assigned before the Olympic break.

The Bruins tied it up 3:41 into the middle frame on a power play goal from Craig Cunningham. Cunningham's team-leading 20th goal of the season evened the score at 1-1.

The Pens took a 2-1 lead midway through the 2nd period on a weird bounce in the corner boards. Nick Drazenovic dumped a puck into the corner and it popped out in front to Spencer Machacek, who tapped into an empty net as Bruins goaltender Niklas Svedberg anticipated the dump in by Drazenovic to make its way behind the net.

The Bruins again countered with a late 2nd period goal to even things at 2-2 heading into the third period on Alexander Khokhlachev's 14th of the season.

The see-saw battle continued in the third period and the Penguins re-gained the lead at 3-2 just 33 seconds into the final frame on Machacek's 2nd of the night. The Bruins dominated most of the third period, vastly outshooting the Pens and tying the game with 7:45 left in regulation to send it to overtime.

After a scoreless OT, the Bruins scored on three of their four shootout attempts on Penguins netminder Jeff Deslauriers and Niklas Svedberg stopped three of five WBS shooters, including Megna in the 5th round to give the Bruins the shootout victory.

ROSTER NOTES

Jeff Deslauriers got the start in net for the Penguins, stopping 24 of the 27 shots he faced in the loss.

Mike Carman returned to the WBS lineup after missing one game with an illness. Bobby Farnham was scratched to make room for Carman. Anton Zlobin was a healthy scratch again tonight.

Nick D'Agostino has held down the 6th defenseman spot from Harrison Ruopp lately, as Ruopp was the healthy scratch on defense for the third straight game.

WBS Scratches: Brian Dumoulin (lower body), Zach Sill (upper body), Anton Zlobin (healthy), Harrison Ruopp (healthy) and Bobby Farnham (healthy)
