Defenseman Brian Dumoulin looks to make a push in NHL training camp. Photo credit: @ItsJacki.
The rookie camp in London, Ontario is drawing closer as we are about a month away from seeing some of the Penguins prospects from development camp take part in the annual rookie tournament against prospects from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators and Chicago Blackhawks.

  • I posted my third feature from Pens Development camp this past week on goaltender Matt Murray and how he fits in with the current crop of young goalies the Penguins have. If you missed any of them, they are linked below.
  • The Penguins depth chart at forward became more clear this past week as now both restricted free agent forwards have re-signed with the Penguins with Brandon Sutter's two-year, $6.6 million contract the latest of signings in the organization.
  • The Penguins depth on defense is looking to be a battle between guys like Simon Despres, Philip Samuelsson and even Brian Dumoulin. Of the three defenders, only Dumoulin is waiver exempt. With off-season surgeries for both Olli Maatta and Derrick Pouliot this summer, there will be more ice time available to start the season at both the NHL and AHL levels.
  • Denver Manderson, who appeared in 36 games (2G-9A, +1) with the AHL Pens last season, signed a one-year AHL contract with the Toronto Marlies over the weekend. Manderson provides bottom six depth to the Marlies and another option on the penalty kill and faceoff departments.
  • On Sunday evening, the fine folks at Pens Initiative nominated me for the Ice Bucket Challenge to help raise awareness for ALS. I obliged, and now the following three people are on the clock:
    • Jonathan Bombulie, Citizens Voice
    • Cody Wild, ex-WBS defenseman (EDIT: Wild has already completed the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge)
    • Ian Altenbaugh, Hockey's Future
    • Bobby Farnham, WBS Penguins
