Pouliot & The Penguins Finish Weekend With Win Over Binghamton

Sunday, October 26, 2014
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (4-4-0-0) finished off their first three-game weekend of the season with a 3-2 win over the Binghamton Senators (2-3-2-0) in another East Division battle. The Penguins took four out of a possible six points on the weekend, and with the win move back into the logjam of teams tied for second place in the East Division.

Derrick Pouliot scored his first pro goal and added an assist on Tom Kostopoulos' first period goal, while Andrew Ebbett tallied the eventual game-winner early in the third period. Eric Hartzell stopped 21 of 23 shots in first start of the season to pick up the win.

Andrew Hammond was impressive in net for the BSens, stopping 37 shots of the 40 that came his way, including 15 of 16 Penguins shots in the third period. It just simply wasn't enough for the BSens, after getting into penalty trouble in the 3rd period and only mustering five shots in the final 20 minutes.

The Penguins next game isn't until Wednesday night when they make their first ever visit to the PPL Center in Allentown, Pa. for a 7:05 p.m. face-off against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, who beat the Penguins 5-2 back on opening night. The BSens return home for a Wednesday night match with the Utica Comets.

The Penguins did not look like a team playing their third game in three nights in the first period. They had the extra pep in their step the first eight minutes of the contest, jumping out to a 2-0 lead.

First it was Bryan Rust, who continues to impress early in his rookie season. Rust took a pass from Derrick Pouliot, beat his man around the edge and fired a shot on BSens netminder Andrew Hammond. Hammond made the stop, but the rebound squirted right to an open Tom Kostopoulos on the doorstep and the Penguins captain tallied his first of the season to put the home team up 1-0 just 4:01 into play.

A little over three minutes later on a power play, Pouliot lasered a wrist shot from the point to the top corner on Hammond to extend the Pens' lead to 2-0. Credit J-S Dea and Andrew Ebbett with assists on the play, but it was Pouliot's NHL-caliber shot that whistled into the net and put the Penguins up early.

The BSens got to their game in the second half of the opening period, drawing within a goal after Kostopoulos' stick broke in the defensive zone. Chris Wideman got the puck at the point, danced around the Penguins captain and made a beeline to the net, picking a corner on Hartzell and cutting the Pens' lead in half at 2-1. Aaron Johnson & David Dziurzynski got credit for assists on the goal with 4:35 left in the period.

In a back-and-forth second period filled with penalties, the BSens battled back and tied it on their fourth power play of the game. Cole Schneider batted a puck out of mid air and past Hartzell to even the game at 2-2 with 6:14 left in the middle period.

But it was the Penguins prevailing in the third after Ebbett's goal 3:50 into the final frame, though an Adam Payerl goalie interference minor with 2:20 left made things interesting. A big penalty kill from the Pens and some timely saves from Hartzell were enough to get them two points.
