Shootout Style - Sound Tigers Sneak Past Phantoms

Saturday, December 6, 2014
Jesper Pettersson returned to the Phantoms lineup tonight.
The Lehigh Valley Phantoms put forth a much better effort tonight against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and gave fans at the PPL Center no shortage of excitement, but ultimately come up short in a shootout in a 3-2 loss to the Sound Tigers tonight.

The Phantoms held a 2-1 lead going into the final frame, but former Penguins forward Colin McDonald tied the game at 2-2 with 5:21 left in regulation to send it to overtime - the 5th time at home in 11 games this season that the extra session was needed on home ice.

There was plenty of scoring chances for both teams in the extra session, but goaltenders Rob Zepp (37 saves) and Kevin Poulin (27 saves) stood tall in net to force the shootout.

In the shootout, Jason Akeson put the Phantoms ahead 1-0 but he was the lone goal scorer for the Phantoms while C.J. Stretch and Kael Mouillierat tallied shootout goals for Bridgeport in the win.

The two teams rematch in Connecticut tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. ET

In a penalty-filled first period, the Phantoms and Sound Tigers played to a scoreless tie. Robert Hagg was noticeably more physical in the first frame than he has been all season, taking two penalties for two big hits he dished out in the first half of the opening period.

The Phantoms had a 5-on-3 power play chance for the full two minutes with 7:59 left in the 1st, but were unable to get one past Sound Tigers netminder Kevin Poulin. That would be a trend that continued for both teams tonight as the a Phantoms went 0-for-9 on the power play for the game, while the Sound Tigers went 0-for-6 with the man advantage.

The penalties continued into the 2nd period, but so did some goals. Brett Hextall tallied a goal for the second straight night to put the Phantoms ahead 1-0 on a nice feed from Kevin Goumas 6:08 into the middle frame. The lead was short-lived.

Bridgeport quickly responded and tied the game at 1-1 just 30 seconds later, as a point shot through traffic from Sound Tigers captain Aaron Ness found it's way past Zepp with 13:22 left in the 2nd period. Alan Quine and Mark Nemec picked up assists on Ness's 3rd of the season.

The Phantoms continued to work and re-gained the lead back at 2-1 just 1:21 after the Sound Tigers' tying goal. On a delayed penalty call, Andrew Gordon won a puck battle behind the Sound Tigers net and fed a pass through to Darroll Powe parked in the slot. Powe quickly fired one on net and past Poulin for his 4th goal of the year. Mark Alt added a secondary assist on the play.

The Phantoms took the one goal lead into the third period before McDonald finished off a one-timer to force overtime.
