Brett Hextall (pictured above) set up the game's first goal, but it was a long night of special teams troubles for the Phantoms tonight. |
Petr Straka actually put the Phantoms in front 3:15 into the contest on a power play goal, but special teams came back to bite the home team tonight as the Bears tallied three power play goals of their own and added a shorthanded tally in a big win for the East Division-leading Bears.
Tim Kennedy, Stanislav Galiev and Connor Carrick led the way offensively for the Bears with a goal and two assists each. Petr Straka and Brandon Manning tallied goals for the Phantoms in the loss.
The Phantoms have two more games this week before the AHL goes on break for the All-Star Classic in Utica, starting with a Friday night trip to Syracuse for a matchup with the Crunch before hosting St. John's on Saturday.
The Phantoms got off to a good start, taking a 1-0 lead 3:15 into play on a power play tally from Petr Straka. Brett Hextall took a bad angle shot that Bears netminder Philipp Grubauer stopped, but the Bears goalie lost sight of the rebound and Straka rushed in to poke it into the net to give the Phantoms an early lead.
The Phantoms had a chance to make it 2-0 with a power play midway through the opening frame, but the Bears were able to kill it off and quickly tie the game at 1-1 with help from the guy coming out of the penalty box - Connor Carrick. Carrick's shot on an ensuing odd man rush was stopped by Ouellette, but similar to the Phantoms first goal, the goalie lost sight of the rebound and this time Casey Wellman was Johnny on the spot to tie things up with 10:39 left in the first period.
On the next shift, Brandon Manning was whistled for a slashing minor and the Bears cashed in on the power play with 7:44 left in the opening period to take a 2-1 lead. Stanislav Galiev took a pass from Chris Brown and fired a shot from atop the face-off circle through traffic and past Ouellette. Carrick added his second assist of the period on the play.
Less than two minutes later, with the Phantoms on a power play, Dustin Gazley found Jim O'Brien splitting the defense in the neutral zone and fed him a stretch pass to spring O'Brien on a shorthanded breakaway. O'Brien made no mistake, going forehand to backhand to the top shelf to put the Bears ahead 3-1 with 5:20 left before the first intermission.
That would be the end of the night for Ouellette, who was replaced by Anthony Stolarz at that point after allowing three goals on seven shots in 14:33 of work.
Tempers flared late in the first period and a pair of fights broke out featuring Manning vs. Steve Oleksy in one and Brett Flemming vs. Erik Burgdoerfer the other, setting the tone for the second period.
Much of the same in the middle frame, as the Phantoms continued to shoot themselves in the foot with undisciplined penalties. The Bears extended the lead to 6-1 on a pair of power play goals 5:46 apart in the first half of the second period and an even strength goal with 7:37 left before the second intermission to break the game open.
Kennedy added a four-on-four goal halfway through a penalty-filled third to make it 7-1 Hershey before a five-on-three power play tally from Manning completed the 7-2 final score.
