The BSens & Phantoms
The Lehigh Valley Phantoms dropped a 4-1 game to the Binghamton Senators in a game much closer than the final score indicates.

The Phantoms took a brief lead in the first period on a Jason Akeson, but played the majority of the game in a 1-1 deadlock until the final minutes of the 2nd period. Down 2-1 entering the third, the Phantoms played with a determined effort but couldn't find a game-tying goal before allowing two empty net goals in the final 1:48 of regulation.

The BSens got goals from Shane Prince, Cole Schneider, Carter Camper and Buddy Robinson in the win, while ex-Penguins goaltender Peter Mannino stopped all but one of the 30 shots he faced for his second win of the season.

Rob Zepp stopped 23 of the 25 shots he faced before a collision with a sliding Matt Puempel took Zepp out of the game 1:18 into the third. Anthony Stolarz came on in relief of Zepp, who was originally helped off the ice without putting any weight on his right leg. Zepp later came back on the ice during a media timeout to stretch out his lower body ailment but he didn't return.

The Phantoms (21-20-4-1) finish the weekend facing a Hershey team now unbeaten in their last nine games (8-0-0-1) following an overtime win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins tonight.

The Phantoms got off to a good start, pressuring the BSens in their defensive zone the first few shifts of the game. They were rewarded for their efforts 5:08 into the first period with a 1-0 lead on a follow up by Jason Akeson.

Taylor Leier's shot was stopped by Mannino, but the rebound went behind the net where Andrew Gordon won a puck battle. Gordon put a puck between Manino's legs that hit the inside of the post, but luckily for the Phantoms Akeson was in position for the rebound atop the crease.

The lead was short lived however, as the BSens evened things up at 1-1 on the neck to shift just 42 seconds later. Alex Grant's point shot through traffic was stopped by Zepp, but the puck squirted out to Prince who had no trouble firing home the rebound for his 16th of the season. Matt Puempel also added an assist on the play.

From there, things picked up in terms of pace and chances exchanged between the two teams. The Phantoms saw the game's first power play chance go by the wayside, and took back-to-back penalties to end the first frame. The PK provided another strong effort in the first 20 minutes.

In the middle frame, the high-paced play continued. A string of penalties early in the period provided some four-on-four action with alternating brief power plays for both teams, but the final 12:02 of the period was played at even strength.

The Phantoms had the better of play in the middle frame, but a late odd man chance off the rush with 1:48 before the second intermisison gave the BSens a 2-1 lead. It was a bad break for the Phantoms on the play as Steven Delisle was able to block down a pass across from Prince to Schneider, but the puck ended up on Schneider's stick anyway and he buried one past Zepp to give the BSens a one goal lead heading into the third period.

The BSens held onto their one-goal lead through the third period despite several chances by the Phantoms in the final eight minutes.

ROSTER NOTES - Phantoms

Rob Zepp (23 saves - 25 shots) got the start in net tonight for the Phantoms, with Anthony Stolarz serving as backup. Zepp left the game 1:18 into the third period after a sliding Matt Puempel took his legs out from under him. Stolarz (5 saves - 5 shots) came on in relief of Zepp.

One change on defense as Jesper Pettersson returned to the lineup after being a healthy scratch following the tallying of his first AHL goal last Saturday.

Scratches: Mark Alt (broken hand - out since 12/31), Shayne Gostisbehere (ACL surgery - resumed skating), Blair Jones (lower body - out long term), Adam Comrie (healthy) and Darroll Powe (upper body - day-to-day).
