Matt Murray Shuts Out Falcons For Third Straight Time This Season

Tuesday, February 3, 2015
Matt Murray has had Springfield's number this season.
Matt Murray has owned the Springfield Falcons this season, earning his third shutout in three games against the Falcons in a 4-0 win for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins tonight.

It was Murray's 5th shutout of the season, a 28-save shutout tonight, and against Springfield this season has stopped all 77 shots he's faced in three wins combining to a score of 14-0.

The Penguins got strong play in net, but some of the rookie forwards continued to shine as well. Scott Wilson tallied a goal and two assists and brings his points total to 11 (7G-4A) points in his last seven games since returning to the AHL.

Bryan Rust also tallied a goal and two assists for the Penguins in the win, while Andrew Ebbett tallied two power play goals as the Pens went 3-for-5 on the man advantage in a bounce back win of their own after a 6-2 blowout loss at home to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Saturday.

The Penguins (25-18-1-3) finish the week with road contests Saturday in Hershey at 7:00 p.m. ET and Sunday afternoon at 3:00 ET against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

A fast-moving first period saw Springfield with a decided edge in offensive zone time in the first 13 minutes of play, out shooting the Penguins 6-1. If not for a few nice saves from Murray and a missed open net chance by Carter Sedlak, it could have been an early hole for the Penguins.

That's how things remained until a Kerby Rychel hook on Nick Drazenovic with 2:17 left in the 1st frame. The Penguins converted on the game's first power play 15 seconds later as Scott Wilson tallied his 10th goal of the season. Drazenovic and Sheary tallied assists on Wilson's 7th goal in eight games since returning to the AHL.

The second period started much like the first, with the Falcons jumping out with the early edge in play. The Falcons got an early period power play after a Barry Goers delay of game penalty but couldn't get one past Murray, who made several impressive saves on the penalty kill.

After being out shot 8-3 in the first half of the middle frame, the Pens picked up their play in the latter parts of the 2nd period, rattling off the next six shots and spending more time in the offensive zone.

All in all, it was a goaltender's duel between Murray (19 saves - 19 shots) and Monroe (16 saves - 17 shots) through two periods.

Rust added what turned out to be the insurance goal 4:07 into the third period, feeding a pass to Nick D'Agostino and following up his shot, putting the rebound past Munroe for Rust's 12th of the season.

The Pens killed off two Falcons power plays from there, due in large part to strong penalty killing and goaltending by Murray.

Andrew Ebbett scored a pair of 5-on-3 power play goals 55 seconds apart in the final 3:07 after a double minor high-sticking penalty to ex-WBS captain Ryan Craig on Alex Boak and a subsequent Brett Ponich high-stick on Tom Kuhnhackl 1:03 later.
