Phantoms head coach gathers the team for some instruction between drills at practice Tuesday afternoon. |
The top-nine forward core on the ice today could rival any team in the league. The depth of the team, just now showing itself because of all the injuries, will be needed heading into the second half of the season. But man, that AHL top nine:
Chris Conner - Tim Brent - Colin McDonald
Taylor Leier - Sam Gagner - Aaron Palushaj
Danick Martel - Nick Cousins - Petr Straka
Of course, nothing is set in stone with the lines and pairings in a Tuesday practice with three days until a three-game weekend kicks off. The Phantoms have nine veterans on the roster and by rule. only six can play - meaning three veterans (i.e. McDonald, Palushaj, Conner, Lashoff, Brent, Rosehill, MacDonald and Gagner) have to sit out each game.
Davis Drewiske is the ninth veteran on the roster, but by rule one player with between 260 and 320 pro games can play in addition to five more with over 320 games. Drewiske is the only player who falls under that 'flex' veteran spot, which will leave head coach Scott Gordon with some tough lineup decisions to make starting this weekend - something he hasn't had to do much of this season. For the most part, it's been a struggle for the Phantoms to field a full playing roster game in and game out.
