The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins couldn't generate consistent pressure on offense, managing just eight shots through the first two periods. Despite that, the Penguins defense and Eric Hartzell kept them in the hockey game at a 2-0 deficit.
The Penguins didn't have that third period magic in them tonight, although they gave the Worcester Sharks and goaltender Harri Sateri everything they had in the third period, managing 17 shots on goal.
The Penguins didn't get on the scoreboard until Nick Drazenovic was hooked on a breakaway with 2:30 left in regulation. He converted on the penalty shot and brought the Penguins back into the game at a 3-1 deficit. They pulled their goaltender and peppered Worcester with shots, but Sateri made the saves and the Sharks added an empty goal for a 4-1 final tonight.
Two things worth mentioning about this game moving forward.
First is the fact that with all these call ups, Bobby Farnham has been inserted into more situations and has played well. He's seen time on the penalty kill where his speed and hustle are showcased and even made an appearance on the 2nd power play unit tonight, getting in front of the net looking for a deflection.
Secondly, forward C.J. Severyn was not seen on the ice after receiving a check to the head from Sharks captain Rob Davison with 5:55 left in the third period. The hit happened at center ice near the boards where the two team benches meet. Severyn was tended to by trainer Kyle Moore and the two left the ice and went down the tunnel to the locker room.
If Severyn is unable to play tomorrow when the Penguins host the Syracuse Crunch, a forward will need to be added overnight as the only other forward on the WBS roster is the injured Adam Payerl, who is out long term with an upper body injury.
The top option from the Pens affiliate in Wheeling looks to be Zack Torquato, who is tied for 2nd in the ECHL in scoring with 31 points (9G-22A). The Nailers played tonight at home in Wheeling, WV so if a call up is coming I would expect an official announcement tomorrow morning.
The Penguins are back at it tomorrow night at home against the Syracuse Crunch.
