Mormina adds a veteran presence to a young WBS blue line. |
The Penguins announced earlier this morning the re-signing of Joey Mormina to a one-year AHL contract. A good depth move on defense as well as a good veteran presence on what appears to be a very young defensive core in Wilkes-Barre next season.
Mormina, who just turned 30 at the end of June, is coming off one of his best offensive seasons of his pro career. His six goals was a career high and his 21 points was his second highest in his seven seasons in the AHL. Not that we should come to expect offensive production from Mormina, as he uses his 6-6 frame to kill penalties and play defense. Just an added bonus when he puts one in the back of the net. Glad to have Mormina back for one more year.
Carl Sneep has re-signed
"Just re[-]signed with the penguins for another year. Excited to be part of a great organization for the upcoming season!"Sneep, 24, is coming off an injury plagued season where he only played in 10 games after December 28th. He might be the forgotten WBS defenseman from last season besides Boris Valabik. Sneep's new one year deal gives him, in my opinion, one last shot to impress the organization. With guys like Simon Despres, Joe Morrow, Derrick Pouliot and Olli Maata now in the mix, Sneep needs to make an impression this season.
Also mentioned in the Sneep story above is the re-signing of forward Keven Veilleux to a one-year, two-way contract. Veilleux is coming off a knee injury that put him on the shelf the entire 2011-12 season. He hasn't been able to stay healthy in his tenure with the Penguins organization but he was playing great hockey during the second half of the 2010-11 season, tallying 24 points (6G-18A) in his final 30 games.
I'm very high on Veilleux and think for a guy his size he has a ton of potential if he can stay healthy. A big if that we will see answered in 2012-13.
